Who We Are
Cypress Spice Company was formed in fall of 2019, by Sabrina Hymel Bethurum and husband of 23 years, Greg Bethurum with help from our daughter Avery. When Dad decided to retire from the spice business, he wanted to keep it in the family, so we formed Cypress Spice Company to continue to provide Captain Mike’s Seasoning Blends to our customers.
Sabrina was born and raised in South Louisiana near New Orleans. Growing up, family life was centered on activities in the marshes, swamps, and bayous. As in many Louisiana homes, enjoyment of food and the preparation of fresh seafood and game were, and still are, huge. As a child, Sabrina was an important test subject in the development of the Captain Mike’s formulas.
Greg was born in San Diego and travelled the country with his parents as a young child, even living in Key West for a while where he caught his first barracuda. Greg grew up in Galveston, Texas, where he fished the marshes of Galveston Bay and had his own 14’ flat boat with a 2.5 hp Suzuki on the back at age 11. Surfing and fishing were Greg’s two main interests in Texas when he met Sabrina in 1990.
Family & Tradition
Now, Sabrina and Greg live with daughter, Avery on the East coast of central Florida. Greg continues the tradition of putting food on the table by fishing the beaches, offshore out of Port Canaveral and Sebastian Inlet, as well as shrimping and fishing in the estuaries of the Indian River Lagoon. They travel as much as possible back to Louisiana to visit family, enjoy the swamps and bayous, and share the cultural heritage with Avery.
Louisiana State Tree
Cypress Spice Company was named for Sabrina’s favorite tree which they’ve planted on their property in Florida. It is the State Tree of Louisiana and also grows naturally in much of Florida and the Gulf Coastal regions of Texas.
